Assistant Geotechnical Engineer – Cardiff, UK

Due to an increase in workload, we are seeking an Assistant Geotechnical Engineer or Engineering Geologist to be based in our Cardiff Office to undertake engineering geological support and geotechnical design work for a range of interesting projects throughout the UK.
Our projects mainly lie within the transportation, energy, water and maritime market sectors. A large proportion of our work is undertaken within national frameworks, for government agencies and for design and build contractors.
The position is with our team of geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists and geo-environmental specialists in Cardiff. The role will be to provide input to the geological and geotechnical investigation, design, construction and post construction monitoring aspects of projects. The work is likely to include desk and feasibility studies, ground investigations and ground modelling, together with interpretative reporting and some geotechnical analysis and design of earthworks, foundations and retaining structures.
Organisationally, the role will be within Tunnelling and Ground Engineering Practice which forms part of the Rail and Ground Engineering Group. The Cardiff geotechnical team works seamlessly with other Jacobs geotechnical teams across the UK, and is linked to those offices by close technical networks.
Role responsibilities
You will work within project teams and will report to task leads and project managers.  The priorities of your role will include:
•Assisting with planning, design and supervision of ground investigations
•Interpretation of ground and groundwater conditions
•Assisting with preparation of technical specifications.
•Undertaking geotechnical calculation and design work
•Monitoring construction works
•Assisting with the preparation of technical notes and geotechnical reports
•Liaising with contractors and clients, both internal and external
•Monitoring task budgets
Many of our schemes are multi- disciplinary and will require you to liaise with project teams of varying complexity and size in Cardiff and across the UK.
The minimum qualifications for this position are:
The ideal candidate should possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge.
•A sound academic knowledge of engineering geology and geotechnics
•Some familiarity with geotechnical design software, design codes and standards would be an advantage
•Strong communication skills with fluency in verbal and written English
•Numerate
•Computer literate in MS Office package (or similar)
•Problem solving & analytical skills
•Team player but with an ability to work independently when required
•Planning & organisational skills
•Motivated to deliver high quality
•Commitment to professional and personal development
•Typically at least two years post graduate experience
The minimum qualifications are:
•First degree in geology / geotechnical engineering
•MSc in soil mechanics / geotechnical engineering / engineering geology / foundation engineering would be an advantage
