As a Senior / Principal Geotechnical Engineer, you will work as part of a team of geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists, providing support and advice to the wider Jacobs business and clients as well as acting as team leader on your own projects.  You will lead or assist in the delivery of geotechnical input to projects and will also be required to provide technical guidance, support and mentoring to less experienced junior engineers and technicians.
We are seeking a Senior or Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our team, based full time in the M4 Smart Motorway Project (SMP) Site Office near Reading. The site position is to provide geotechnical support to Contract 1 construction activities for the above project. The anticipated duration of the site role is 2 to 3 years.
The M4 site works include:
•58km of motorway widening, to provide a 4th running lane in each direction
•Demolition of 3 existing overbridges and construction of new steel-concrete composite overbridges on piled foundations
•Widening of the 82m span Bray underbridge over the Thames on large diameter piled foundations
•Construction of an 8m high x 120m long retaining wall at Ascot Road
•Up to 3m high retaining walls at Marsh Lane
•Underbridges with parapet, verge and central reserve works
•Gantries: 3 superspan portals removed; 18 new superspan portals, 10 new super cantilever signs and many new MS4/MS3s, all on piled foundations
•Concrete pier collars to seven existing overbridges.
•100’s of minor structures: mast structures, ROTTMs and verge signs on piled foundations
•Substantial lengths of environmental barriers on piled foundations

•28km of embankment/cutting (25/3 split) earthworks
•3km of retaining structures including sheet piled walls and L-shaped walls
•Carriageway and earthworks drainage
The position is within our site-based team of civil, highway and geotechnical engineers. The role will be to work alongside our client (Highways England) and our construction delivery partner Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV) JV to provide specialist technical oversight and assurance.
A further geotechnical site role has also been identified with specific responsibility for geotechnical aspects of structures, and the person in that role will report directly to the holder of this post.
The role will require close and effective liaison between all parties on site and office-based design teams in order to achieve timely, cost-efficient and practical solutions to problems and queries which arise during the construction phase.
Organisationally, the role will be within our Tunnels and Geotechnical Engineering discipline, which sits in our Rail and Ground Engineering group. Members of these groups are linked by close technical networks.
Generally liaising with BBV and Highways England and reporting directly to the Designer’s Site Representative you will be required to assure the quality rather than directly supervise the works. Below is a list of tasks that will be required:
•Site inspection and assurance of the works to confirm that the Designer’s intentions are being correctly implemented into the works
•Reviewing of BBV drawings, procedures, and temp works
•Undertake minor design, drawing and BIM updates with major design changes being from the design office
·Responding to BBV and Highways England site queries
•Liaison with the office-based design teams
•Reporting on programme and progress
•Liaising with contractors and clients
The minimum qualifications for this position are:

The ideal candidate should possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge.

•A sound academic knowledge of civil and geotechnical engineering

•Working knowledge of geotechnical design software, design codes and Highways England standards

•Specific experience in highway geotechnics including retaining structures and earthworks

•Good relevant post-graduate experience in design offices and on major highway construction sites

•Awareness of civil engineering contracts and processes (NEC, ICE etc)

•Strong communication skills with fluency in verbal and written English

•Numerate

•Computer literate in MS Office package (or similar)

•Problem solving & analytical skills

•Team player but with an ability to work independently when required

•Planning & organisational skills

•Motivated to deliver high quality

•Commitment to professional and personal development

The minimum academic and professional qualifications are:

•First degree in civil engineering from a recognised European university

•MSc in soil mechanics / geotechnical engineering / engineering geology / foundation engineering

•CEng, MICE or equivalent
